Holy Tuning

As the Day draws near, the hustle and bustle becomes more of a hustle for many of us.  Schedules are being coordinated, visits being planned, Christmas lists have grown longer, the gifting seems endless, and moms are receiving, "Mom, can you cook this for Christmas" requests.  Oh, the joy of being amid such excitement and anticipation.  But the hustle and bustle elves bumping me around, have me longing for a quiet night.

It's as though the noise has become too loud for me to hear.  Or could it be that I'm not tuned correctly to hear, really hear.

Thankfully, I found myself in a quiet place this week, joining several hundred people at a Symphony Christmas concert.  We arrived and were seated high above the music-makers.  Our view was soaring above the instruments, and the voices.  Yes, it was crowded but in the most lovely way.  The musicians began to tune, the concertmaster appeared, and was greeted with applause.  The final tune key was given, and all the players complied.

Then the quiet.  All multi-hundreds of those gathered were quiet in anticipation.  "Not a creature stirred". And then the purposeful step of the maestro was heard.  He arrived to applause, shook the hand of the concertmaster, acknowledged the audience and then focused on the most important - his musicians.  Those who have come to give their all, to raise their voice, their trumpet, their flute, their drum.

As the first selection was played, the 'quiet' I longed for arrived.  It was the quiet of perfectly aligned instrumentation, harmony, a chorus of community all experiencing a perfect sound.  We were surrounded by love beside, behind, in front and within.  In that moment, I was complete in the love of my Maestro, the One from whom all music flows.

May our hustle and bustle be tuned to the quiet anticipation of what is ahead for us - the hope, the glory, the direction of the One.  The One who continues to come and be born in our world and in each of us.  What tune will you play today?

I have not gift to bring, pa rum pum pum rum
Come, they told me, pa rum pum pum pum
A newborn King to see, pa rum pum pum pum

I am a poor boy, too, pa rum pum pum pum
I have no gift to bring, pa rum pum pum pum
That's fit to give the King, pa rum pum pum pum,

Shall I play for you, pa rum pum pum pum, On my drum?
Mary nodded, pa rum pum pum pum

Then He smiled at me, pa rum pum pum pum Me and my drum.

"The Little Drummer Boy" (originally known as "Carol of the Drum"). Lyrics by Katherine Kennicott Davis, 1941.
